Kayaking in the Lakes of the Sabor river
The river Sabor and its affluents gave rise to an impressive complex of lakes, the Lagos do Sabor, after the construction of the Larinho and Feiticeiro dams. Kayaking is a great way to navigate these lakes that have significantly altered the original landscape, with some influence on the wildlife communities. We’ll hike near the Angueira and Maçãs rivers upstream, within protected areas that retain original characteristics with their landscapes strongly marked by the influence of the Mediterranean climate.
The natural vegetation is mainly dominated by scrubland, with areas of valuable woodland such as cork oaks, holm oaks and juniper trees. The most important floral communities are made up of species adapted to steep habitats and riverbeds, where boxwood (Buxus sempervirens) stands out. The characteristics of these valleys, with their steep, undisturbed banks, provide good nesting conditions for various bird species, particularly those typical of rocky environments. Threatened species such as the golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), Bonelli’s eagle (Hieraaetus fasciatus) and peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) are frequent in these areas.
These territories are still very important for various animal species, directly or indirectly associated with the rivers, such as the otter (Lutra lutra), the water mole (Galemys pyrenaicus), the Mediterranean terrapin (Mauremys leprosa) and various species of fish and aquatic invertebrates, rare and endemic to the Iberian Peninsula.
The whole area of the reservoir is still in the process of adapting to the new ecological characteristics, with species typical of large bodies of inland water appearing more and more frequently.
